The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences is to prepare students for competence in the important, challenging, and ever-changing work of the family. Our aim is to strengthen families by empowering individuals to take action for the well being of themselves and others in the home, workplace, community, and world. To that end, our curriculum focuses on improving the students' skills in four areas:

  • problemsolving
  • management
  • interpersonal relations
  • citizenship

  • We begin each year by teaching or reviewing one of these four skills (we call it an empowering skill) and then apply the skill in various content areas.
  • In sixth grade, the empowering unit is Practical Reasoning.
  • In seventh grade. the empowering unit is Adolescent Life Management.
  • In eighth grade, the empowering unit is an advanced level of Practical Reasoning.
