OPERATION CARING CLASSROOM A National Education Initiative administered by: The Armed Forces Foundation's "Families Serve Too" Awareness Campaign A civilian based school and a military-impacted school are paired together in an effort to encourage a personal dialogue between the students of these schools. There are many ways to create this dialogue, from the pen-pal program outlined in the booklet, to sharing pictures, strength chains and other displays of support. Life isn’t always easy for the child of a military family. They face many obstacles as they grow up. Military families move frequently, which means leaving familiar things behind and having to adjust to a new school and needing to make new friends. Often they face a year or more with a parent being away in another country. To show our support and appreciation of their sacrifices we constructed a “strength chain.”
Each PFE student and staff member was provided with a strip of red, white, or blue construction paper and asked to write an individual message of strength, conveying hope and inspiration... such as; “Thanks for serving. Families serve too!”, “Thanks for being strong, brave kids.”, "We're thinking about you today!", “We care about all of you.", or “Thanks for all that YOU and your families do so we can be free.” The strips were made into links and joined together to form chain segments and then all the chain segments are joined into one “strength chain”, which when completed was sent to the students of Lewis and Clark Elementary School (serving the Astoria Coast Guard Base community with 450 students) 92179 Lewis & Clark Road Astoria, OR 97103 Contact: Brian Ploghoft Below are photos of some of PFE's classroom students with the chain segments they helped to construct
