Welcome to 8thGrade General Music!  I am pleased that you are here and look forward to getting to know you in the coming semester.  We will be covering a variety of topics and concepts in class, including the following:

  • Basic Keyboarding Skills
  • Composition Skills and Techniques
  • Music Historical Periods and Genres
  • Composers
  • Singing and Proper Vocal Technique

Materials Needed:

  • A 3-ring loose leaf binder OR a folder with three prongs
  • College or wide-ruled paper (keep this in your binder or folder)
  • A PENCIL/PEN
  • Music Workbooks (Keyboard AND/OR History)
  • Your LAPTOP!
  • Earbuds for keyboarding and laptop use

Notebook Policy/Expectations:

You will receive a keyboard workbook at the beginning of the 8th grade music.   This workbook is designed to last throughout the whole semester.  The music history workbooks will take on different forms: sometimes they will be electronic, other times you will have paper packets. PLEASE treat these workbooks as your “textbooks” for music class.  You are responsible to have them with you for each class and to know where they are at all times.

Grading:

You will have three graded areas each marking period: Keyboard/Composition,Classwork, and Music History.  Grades from these areas will be based on a point system.  Your final grade will be calculated by adding together the total number of points received, then dividing by the total number of points possible.  Grades will be updated on a weekly basis and will always be available to view on your Student Portal online. If you are unsure of your grade or need clarification about an assignment, please ask me at anytime!

Classwork:

*MOST music assignments can be completed during class time.  Be responsible and keep track of specific due dates, especially for keyboard assignments. The keyboard curriculum moves quickly and it is easy to get behind if work is not finished on time.

*You will not be permitted to go to your locker to retrieve an assignment during class.  Please be prepared and bring your work with you.

*If you know in advance that you will be absent from class, please see me to get your work before you leave.

Class Rules:

  1. RESPECT everyone, everything (keyboards, textbooks, etc.), and the music we will be learning about!
  2. PARTICIPATE: Discussions, compositions, listening, singing, and playing instruments will be integral parts of our class.  I encourage you to share your thoughts and opinions.
  3. LISTEN: Developing our music listening skills and learning different ways to listen to music will be a major focus of this course.
  4. Bring all necessary materials with you to class.

I look forward to a wonderful semester in music. Please come to class ready to be creative and learn!  Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any problems, questions, or concerns.
