Advisory

Advisory is a program inspired by the “Every Student, Every Day” initiative.  The goal of Advisory is for every student at PFMS to get to know at least one adult very well.  We want all students to feel that they are important and to know that there are adults at school who care about them and can help them.

Our Advisory program is designed to:
  1. Help foster a school community where everyone belongs
  2. Assist students with goal setting and learning skills
  3. Develop self awareness of student’s strengths and areas of growth
  4. Give students the opportunity to practice lifelong skills such as how to handle anger and use good manners
  5. Nurture a mentoring relationship with a caring adult

We have three different kinds of lessons through Advisory:

Mentoring, Academics, and P.R.I.D.E.

Mentoring sessions allow students to get to know their Advisor and the other students in their Advisory group through team building activities and lessons that teach lifelong skills.

Academic lessons help students learn how to study, how to take tests, how to get organized, and how to be successful in school.

P.R.I.D.E. lessons help prevent bullying and make sure that everyone feels welcome, respected, and comfortable at school.

Some of the activities take place in the morning during “homebase” and some take place during AREA time.  Smaller homerooms make it possible for the Advisor to get to know students on a more personalized basis.  Each morning of the week has a different focus:

Monday- Preview of the Week (overview of upcoming team assignments and events, team building activities)
Tuesday- Sustained Silent Reading
Wednesday- PSSA Preparation (practice sample questions and develop test-taking and critical thinking skills)
Thursday- Sustained Silent Reading
Friday- Week In Review (discuss what happened and how the week went, team building activities)
