Mt. Nittany Middle School Memory Garden
"A living memorial celebrated each Earth Day" In the spring 2000, our school’s PTSO and Wellness Committee began the tradition of honoring those who live in our memories by the planting and dedication of a tree. In 2005, we added to the concept of our memory garden by beautifying our courtyard. Our flower gardens and vegetable gardens flourish through all seasons. In doing this we have a space that can be more easily utilized as an outdoor classroom and as a place to enjoy the beauty of nature. Each year since we have had a ceremony and are able to include more loved ones and honorees to our gardens. Engraved stones, that we also dedicate each year, honor those loved ones and special people who have contributed to our school in some unique way as well as those most recent retirees who dedicated so many years of service to our district. During our annual Earth Day and Memory Garden ceremony, we feature our 7th and 8th grade choirs and showcase the different Green Initiatives at MNMS. A procession of students and staff meet in the courtyard where we take a few moments to reflect and remember. Memory cards are made available to be placed on the trees or in the courtyard any time during the day. It is a tradition we hope to continue for many years to come. If you or your group would like to donate a stone to be dedicated, please contact us at rsb11@scasd.org for more information. |
