Developing readers are able to:
  1. See themselves as readers.
  2. Independently read books with predictable patterns.
  3. With adult help, figure out new words by using a variety of word study strategies.
  4. Combine print and illustrations to build meaning.
  5. Can retell main ideas of a story.
  6. Initially browse during silent reading for 10-15 minutes, then gradually become able to read quietly.
  7. Demonstrate comprehension in guided literacy discussions, using a variety of reading materials (fiction, nonfictin, poetry, and drama).
  8. Make connections between familiar topics and unit related activities.
