    Course Title:              Entertainment and Sports Marketing

    Catalog Description:

     

    Marketing is the tool that has allowed the United State Economy to be one of the most successful in the world and Entertainment and Sports Marketing are important parts of our modern economy.  In fact, entertainment is one of the largest exports from the U.S. to the rest of the world.  Students will take a journey through the world of marketing and learn how marketing functions are applied to sports and entertainment in this semester course.  While exploring careers in entertainment and sports marketing, students will engage in hands-on activities and projects, participate in field trips and interact in sessions with guest speakers.

     

    Goals and/or Objectives:

    After completion of the course students will be able to:

    ·        Explain basic marketing concepts and define the seven key marketing functions

     

    ·        Understand target markets and identify marketing strategies for the sports marketing and entertainment fields

     

    ·        Explain sports marketing opportunities in a global economy

     

    ·        Explain the marketing mix for recreation, travel, and tourism.

     

    ·        Define market segmentation in amateur and college sports

     

    ·        Discuss the economic impact of collegiate athletics, conference realignment, and revenue from licensing agreements with colleges.

     

    ·        Identify the financial benefits and perks associated with professional sports

     

    ·        Explore sports agents and the impact of ethical behavior on an athlete’s promotional value

     

    ·        Identify the process of developing a sports market by the use of sponsorship, promotions and endorsements

     

    ·        Discuss the importance of positive public relations for sports

     

    ·        Explore the practice of using community service to advance a sport’s personality’s image.

     

    ·        Evaluate the wide variety of careers available in sports marketing, entertainment, and hospitality careers

     

    ·        Explore the changing channels of distribution available to the sports marketing and entertainment fields

     

    ·        Develop a marketing plan for the sports and entertainment industry

     

    ·        Explore legal issues for the sports and entertainment industry

     

    Evaluation Procedures

    To pass the course, the student must successfully complete in-class assignments, group projects/presentations, tests and quizzes; in conjunction with daily homework assignments. 

     

     

    Attendance:

    Regular attendance is central to success in the class.  In addition, research has shown a positive relationship exists between class attendance and academic achievement.
