Social language is happening when students are on the playground, in the lunch room, observing peers conversing with peers, teachers interacting with students, or even teachers conversing with teachers. It is every day language children learn through socially interacting. Social language can take 6 months to 2 years to develop.Academic language relates to understanding the content language, which correlates with the subject at hand being taught. This can take 5-7 years, or as many as 9 years to develop.Keep in mind that because a student has grasped social language and may seem to be conversing with teachers and peers with ease, it does not always mean they have fully grasped academic language and may need regular check-ins to see how much of a specific content they understand.Can-Do DescriptorsA great way to meet the needs of or ELLs is to know what students will likely be able to do according to their language level. Can do descriptors help the teacher know what expectations to have for students and methods to teach them.
