A Running Record is an individually administered assessment where a student reads aloud with a teacher who records reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension.  Teachers are able to zero in on specific areas of strength and need by studying the strategies each student brings to the text.  Running records are administered three times a year to all students in grades K-2 (Use in K begins in January.). Running records may be utilized in all grades K-5 throughout the year as a part of a teacher's ongoing reading assessment process. SCASD uses the Fountas and Pinnell text leveling system to determine the instructional level of each student.

Words Their Way is a developmental spelling inventory utilized in grades K-2 to determine individual spelling and phonics needs.

End of Unit Reading Assessments are given at the conclusion of most reading units in grades 1-5. These assessments are performance based and reflect the specific standards addressed in the current unit. Teachers use the results to evaluate student learning and plan for future learning.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) is an online benchmark assessment that is administered three times a year to all students in grades 2-6.  The assessment takes about 40-50 minutes to complete and the results are used to guide instruction, monitor student progress, and study district growth.  For additional information about MAP,  please visit our district assessment page.
