In the Fall of 1999, the State College Area School District began the process of integrating student computer skills into the curriculum in grades K-12, with the goal of graduating students who are competent and comfortable users of technology. This integrated curriculum, called the Technology Competency Integration Project (TCIP) is carefully articulated by developmentally appropriate skills, in the areas of word processing and page layout, database, spreadsheets, e-mail, drawing and painting, computer operations, World Wide Web, keyboarding and multimedia presentations. The classroom teacher teaches the technology skills through lessons in which students learn to use the computer as a communications and productivity tool to do their content area work.

Assessments of the students' mastery of the skills are conducted annually in grades 2, 4, 6 and 8.
