Advanced English 10 Course Catalog Description:
Prerequisites: A score of proficient on state and local reading and writing assessments and the recommendation of the 09th-grade English teacher as well as a grade of “A” or above in advanced English 9.
The second of four advanced English courses for students with above-average language arts ability in grades 09-12, this course features some of the same literature selections studied by students in English 10. However, students in Advanced English 10 explore the content in greater depth, move at a faster pace, prepare more long-term assignments, and work toward more challenging standards. Students practice the writing process through a variety of writing experiences that are designed to improve their writing style. Grammar, usage, and vocabulary instruction are integrated into the study of literature and writing. Oral presentation experiences include both individual and group efforts. Expectations include commitment, time-management skills, independent thinking, grade-level or above-average reading ability, above-average writing ability, analysis skills and the willingness to take risks. Assessment is based on the quality of written assignments and tests, contributions to class discussion, oral presentations, participation in groupwork, and the timely submission of homework.
