English 9 builds on and expands the language arts skills developed in preceding grades. Students read novels, short stories, nonfiction, drama, and poetry and are introduced to Shakespeare and his works. Through extensive practice, students use the writing process to create sustained pieces of narrative, informative, and persuasive writing. Instruction in grammar, mechanics, usage, and style is integrated into the study of writing. In addition to studying vocabulary in the context of literature, students improve their word knowledge by studying classical roots. Short talks, oral reports, and group discussions involve students actively in listening and speaking activities. Evaluation is based on tests and quizzes; the timely completion, quality, and thoroughness of work, projects, and performances; and participation in class activities.
