The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) is an adult service agency that provides assistance to people with disabilities in reaching their employment goals. Services that OVR may provide include: vocational guidance and counseling, post secondary evaluations, college assistance, job development, job training and job coaching. Because your son or daughter is receiving learning support services during high school, he/she may be eligible for OVR services.

If your son/daughter is found eligible for services, the OVR counselor will help you and your child develop a plan to achieve his or her postsecondary goal. While some services for eligible individuals are available at no cost to the family, other services may depend on financial need. The postsecondary evaluation that your son or daughter will need to access services at their postsecondary school is a free diagnostic service provided by OVR.

    Opening a case with OVR

In order to open a case with OVR, the student and his or her parent(s) need to first meet with the OVR counselor. It is recommended that a case is open NO LATER than January of the student’s senior year.

    Documentation needed:
    1. Social Security number
    2. Last year’s tax return to identify family income
    3. Medical history/contact information
    4. Documentation of disability (which can be supplied by the school district at the time of the meeting)

Acquiring a postsecondary evaluation from OVR

Typically, this is not set up until spring of the student’s senior year. The OVR counselor will assist in contacting the recommended psychologist.

    Documentation needed:
    1. Documentation of acceptance
    2. Documentation of FAFSA application
    3. Written proof that your insurance will not cover the evaluation
