• Volunteer Athletic Coach Information

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the State College Area School District!

SCASD volunteers serve in a wide variety of roles - some come into contact with our students while others do not. Pennsylvania Act 15 requires that adults (those 18 years of age or older) having direct volunteer contact with children will need background check clearances.

Examples of these types of volunteer activities include, but are not limited to:
    volunteer tutors
    classroom center volunteers
    chaperones for field trips
    volunteer coaches
    homeroom parents, and
individuals who assist with school activities and holiday parties
Volunteers such as guest speakers and mystery readers who remain under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher or administrator are not required to obtain background clearances.

So what do I need to do to be a volunteer athletic coach?

Returning as a volunteer coach from the 2018-2019 school year
If you submitted all of your clearances you will only need to read the district policies and sign the  2019-2020 Volunteer Coach Policy and Procedure Form.

In addition, volunteer athletic coaches must complete the online Concussion and Cardiac Arrest certifications each year.

    Concussion- http://www.nfhs.org or  http://www.sportsafetyinternational.org

    Cardiac Arrest- http://www.sportsafetyinternational.org

Print and submit the certificates to the athletic office. These certifications can be accepted anytime after July 1 for the upcoming school year.

New volunteers are required to have clearances

All clearances must have been obtained less than 60 months (5 years) ago.

    1. Volunteer Policy and Procedure Form
    2. PA Child Abuse History Clearance
    3. PA State Police Criminal Record Check
    4. FBI Criminal Background Check or Self Disclosure Form (may be used in lieu of the FBI check if you have lived in PA continuously for the past 10 years)
    5. Mandated Reporter Training (You do not need to do submit anything for this, just complete the training via the link.)
    6. Bullying, Hazing, and Inappropriate Behaviors -(one time certification)

When all paperwork has been completed, contact the SCASD Athletic Director in order to schedule a time to meet. At this meeting, the volunteer athletic coach will submit all previously required paperwork. In addition, the volunteer athletic coach will receive additional materials and information as well as directions in obtaining a SCASD ID Badge.
