• BRIDGES MATH

     

    Our core math resource in grades K-5 is Bridges in Mathematics, which was adopted by our Board of School Directors in the winter of 2018 for implementation in the 2018-19 school year.  

    "Bridges in Mathematics is a comprehensive PK–5 curriculum that equips teachers to fully implement the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in a manner that is rigorous, coherent, engaging, and accessible to all learners. The curriculum focuses on developing students’ deep understandings of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems. Bridges blends direct instruction, structured investigation, and open exploration. It taps into the intelligence and strengths of all students by presenting material that is as linguistically, visually, and kinesthetically rich as it is mathematically powerful."

    Our math program has two major components:  Bridges and Number Corner

    During Bridges students participate in whole class, small group and individual learning experiences with the core learning objectives for their grade. Bridges provides engaging and real world problems that support and extend student learning, thinking, and understanding. During Bridges students also participate in Work Places where they get to practice, apply and extend thinking through mathematical games.

    Number Corner is a skill-building program that revolves around the classroom calendar, providing daily practice as well as continual encounters with broader mathematical concepts in 15–20 minutes of engaging instruction.

    Bridges program supports deep understanding of mathematical concepts and focuses on the mathematical practices. 

    Bridges strives to make mathematics meaningful, flexible, and engaging for kids. Children will be discovering multiple ways to solve problems, reason about their processes, work collaboratively, and learn to respectfully question and debate.  

    Math assessments are built into the program and allow us to assess students’ learning throughout a unit of study.

    Supports for students who may struggle and extensions for students who are more advanced are built into each unit.

    Family letters are sent home before each unit so you know how we are teaching math concepts as well as how you can help at home.

    We will continue to use IXL and Reflex (grades 2-5) to support practice and fluency.
