    My Philosophy on Teaching English

In the highly esteemed Harry Potter series, Albus Dumbledore utters one of my favorite quotes of all time:

“Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it”

Language is a vital aspect of the human existence – It allows us to communicate our greatest fears, our deepest passions, and quite literally everything in between. My approach to teaching English language balances between an appreciation of great language and excellent communication. Whether you are willing to admit it or not, you love reading and writing. As Jim Burke, education scholar and bestselling author, describes teens and language, “Although students are writing more than ever in their private lives, they do not define writing done online or on phones as ‘writing’” (Burke 66). You love reading and writing– texts, statuses, tweets, notes, etc. – But there is a difference between merely possessing language and knowing how to communicate clearly and effectively. Through your natural love of language, you already hold the power to relate to even the most foreign pieces of literature in the most tantalizing, insightful ways. My goal is to teach you how to hone this love of language in a scholarly manner to explore literature, the world, your community, and yourself. Words are magic, and it is up to you this year to find the magic within them.
