• How Will Mrs. Myers Work With My Child?

    • Classroom Lessons
      • Mrs. Myers goes into each classroom every other week in grades 1-5 and weekly in Kindergarten to provide Social-Emotional Learning Lessons to all students through the Second Step Program and the Zones of Regulation.  Children will be learning Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, Problem Solving Skills, and Bully Prevention through classroom lessons.
      • Please look for follow up activities and Home Links to come home following these lessons.  These are not mandatory and do not need to be returned to school, but are great ways to reinforce material taught at school and open up some family conversations.
    • Small Groups
      • Mrs. Myers and Ms. Leah Kratyz, School Psychologist, facilitate small groups as part of Tier 2 interventions.  These groups form when there is a number of similarly-aged students displaying the same concern or needs.
      • Student referrals come from staff/family referrals, our school-wide screening data, student self referral, or various other data points such as attendance, office disciplinary referrals, nurse visits, change in behavior or school/social performance, etc.
      • In order for your student to participate in a small group, parent permission is required.  You would be contacted by the school counselor and/or psychologist if there is a group forming that may meet your child's needs.
    • New Student and Kindergarten Groups
      • Students new to our school (including all Kindergarten students in the first 2 months of school) are typically invited to lunch with the school counselor as an opportunity to hear about our school and the school counseling program, see the school counseling space, and connect with some peers.
    • Lunch Bunch
      • Small informal groups of peers gathering in the counseling office for lunch.  This could be to promote prosocial skills, help facilitate friendships, to redeem a School Wide Positive Behavior Support reward, or your child may be an invited guest of another student.  If lunch bunches will occur for your student on a consistent basis, you will be informed by Mrs. Myers.
    • Individual Sessions
      • Mrs. Myers works with students individually for short-term goal-focused counseling sessions.  The role of a school counselor is NOT to provide long-term therapy, but rather to help reduce barriers that are getting in the way of a student's academic, personal-social, behavioral or career-readiness success.
      • If your child will be working with Mrs. Myers on an ongoing basis, she will reach out to you to let you know.  A student's privacy and confidentiality will be respected, however she will be happy to provide updates on the skills and goals they are working on together.  As a mandated reporter, she is obligated to follow up with the appropriate agencies on any concerns about a student's safety and well-being, or the safety and well-being of other students.
      • Referrals for individual sessions can come from staff/family referrals, our school-wide screening data, student self referral, or various other data points such as attendance, office disciplinary referrals, nurse visits, change in behavior or school/social performance, etc.
    • Problem Solving/Restorative Circles
      • Mrs. Myers occasionally works with students to solve problems or conflicts between peers through problem solving techniques and or Restorative Processes.
    • Consultation and Collaboration
      • Mrs. Myers works with teachers, families, staff, community agencies, our SAP (Student Assistance Program) and Tier 2/3 teams in order to come up with plans of action that best support each individual student's needs.  Please contact her should you be interested in collaborating to best support your student.
