• State College Field Hockey (SCFH) Coaches - Fall 2021

    Sharon (Kuntz) Herlocher, Head Coach, skh17@scasd.org, 2nd season 

    Sharon took over at the helm of the SCFH program in 2020, after being the middle school coach for 4 seasons. Since then, Sharon has compiled an impressive staff full of women devoted to improving the complete student-athlete. Sharon comes to high school with a long resume of coaching experiences, including a 10 years as the volunteer coach at Penn State, 4 years as the assitant coach at Boston University, and 11 plus seasons coaching club field hockey. A 1994 NCAA All-Amerian, All-Big Ten team selection and PSU team captain, Sharon particpated in 3 Final Fours as a player (1990, 1991, 1993) and several NCAA appearances as a coach. Sharon loves teaching and sharing her love for the game. She co-owns Herlocher Foods and Ottis Properters, and is the Chairman of the Board of the Downtown State College Improvement District. She is a graduate of Lower Dauphin H.S., holds a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science with a minor in Business (Penn State). Sharon's husband Neil is a lifelong rugby player and coach. She is the mother of Charlie, Phebe, and Lanie. 

    Chelle (Frates) Tambroni, Assistant Head Coach, tambogirls@yahoo.com, 2nd season 

    Chelle's high school coaching career started after leading 2 NCAA division 1 collegiate programs, directing 3 club programs across 2 sports, and several stints with the USA Field Hockey developmental program. Chelle spent 10 years as the head coach at Cornell, 3 years as the head coach at Towson University, and 3 years as the assistant at Yale. As a player, she was a U-21 National Team Alternate, a NCAA All-American goal scorer (1990), the Atlantic 10 (A-10) Player of the Year (1990) and led Penn State to their first ever NCAA Final Four appearance (1990). After becoming a mother to 3 girls, she began directing club lacrosse and field hockey programs, first in Ithaca, NY then in State College, PA. A graduate of Woodstock H.S. (VT), Chelle has a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science (Penn State), is a co-owner of MeMi Designs, the wife of PSU Men's Lacrosse Coach, Jeff Tambroni, daughter of legendary Vermont Scholastic Coach Yvonne Frates and mother of Carissa, Maddie, and Ella. 

    Sarah Pergine, Assistant Coach, JV Head Coach, sep24@scasd.org, 1st season

    Sarah joined the SCFH program in spring of 2021 as the middle school assistant coach. Her caoching resume includes 1 year as the volunteer assistant at Temple University, 5 seasons coaching club field hockey (FSC, Philly Hockey Club, Cleveland Hockey Club) and 1 season volunteer coaching with The Ohio State University club program. As a player, Sarah captained a strong University of Iowa team earning 2 Big-Ten Tournament Championships (2007 & 2008) and 1 Final Four appearance (2008). She was a 2x Midwest Region Team and participated in the USA High Performance Tournament. Her 10 years of advising student-athletes is what brought her to State College. We hope to keep her here! She has a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership (Temple University), B.A. in Communication Studies and Sociology (University of Iowa) and is a graduate of Perkiomen Valley H.S. She is an Associate Director for Student-Athlete Programming, Academic Counselor at Penn State University's Morgan Academic Center. Sarah recently became engaged to Justin Schillaci.

    Chelsea (Mearig) Cummins, Volunteer Coach, 3rd season

    Chelsea joined the State College community as a middle school teacher in 2014. Since then, she has been the head field hockey coach for 3 seasons, been an assistant coach for 3 seasons, got married and became a mother of 2. Prior to moving to State College, she spent 10 years as an assistant coach being mentored by some of our sport's most admired high school programs (Conestoga Valley, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Warwick). She was even named the Lancaster-Lebanon 2007 JV Coach of the Year. Coach Cummins won two PIAA State Championships (2000, 2001) with Coach O as a coach! She has a M. Ed. Curriculum Development (Wilkes University), a B.S. English (Ohio University) and a B.S. English Education (Millersville University), is a graduate of Warwick H.S., and is an Academic Literacy teacher in SCASD. Chelsea's husband Ryan is the State College High Wrestling Coach. They are the parents of Kyler and Lawson. 

    Lori (Warneka) O'Donnell, Volunteer Coach, 2nd season 

    Coach "O" came to State College in 2011 after a decorated high school coaching career. She was named the 2006 Lancaster-Lebanon League Coach of the Year and spent 2 years on the PA All-State and All-American selection committees. In 7 short years at the helm of Hempfield H.S., she took the program from a 3-18 record to the PIAA State Tournament. She attributes much of her head coaching success to spending 10 years being mentored by legendary Warwick H.S. coach, Bob Derr, earning 2 PIAA state titles while there. Coach Cummins was a player on both of those Warwick State Championship teams! Coach "O" spent decades coaching club field hockey, 5 years as site director in the USA developmental program and 1 year as a Junior High head coach (Lake-Lehman). As a player, she spent 2 years on TEAM USA FH, was named Atlantic 10 (A-10) Player of the Year 1991, Temple University captain, NCAA All-American, All A-10 conference team 1988-91. In 2000 she was voted #44 of 100 top athletes-Wyoming Valley Player of the Century (Wilkes Barre) and held the NCAA Assists record for decades (currently ranked 18th). She is advising collegiate student-athletes as an Academic Counselor, Penn State University’s Morgan Athletic Center. She has a Masters in Education (Wilkes University) and a B.S. Elementary Education (Temple University). Coach "O" and her husband, Bob, are the parents of Matt, Sydney, and Ryan. 

    Mary Nell Smith, Volunteer Coach, 2nd season 

    Mary Nell enters her coaching career as a high-spirited assistant coach, the leader of the Fall Fundamental youth program and a middle school assistant coach.  She is a 2019 graduate of Penn State, named 2x All Big-Ten Distinguished Scholar Athlete, 4x Division 1 National Academic Squad member and named 4x Academic All-Big Ten. Mary Nell is currently advising collegiate student-athletes as an Academic Counselor at Penn State University’s Morgan Academic Center for Student-Athletes. She is a graduate of Central Dauphin H.S., holds a B.A. in Public Relations with Honors (Penn State) and a M. Ed from Penn State University’s Educational Leadership program. 

    Nicole Rao, Volunteer Coach, 2nd season

    Nicole comes to State College Field Hockey. with a vast field hockey and lacrosse coaching background. While teaching in Florida, she spent 5 years as head coach at East Lake & Palm Harbor H.S. and 5 years as the Assistant Coach Williamsville East H.S. She is a founding member and secretary of the (Adult) Florida Field Hockey Club. She now coaches club field hockey and lacrosse in State College. She spent her collegiate field hockey career at Central Michigan and was named 2014 Sweet Home H.S. Athletics Hall of Fame. She holds a M.S. in Education; Secondary English (Buffalo State College) and a B.S. in Education; Secondary English & Physical Education (Central Michigan) and is currently working on a D.Ed. in Education Leadership (Penn State). She is a Learning Specialist; Penn State University Morgan Academic Center. 

    Beth (Urban) Shaha, Volunteer Coach, 1st season

    Beth brings mindfulness, spirit, and balance to our coaching staff as a certified Life Coach and founder of The Grounded Canary. She is licensed and trained in mindfulness. She played field hockey for 2 years at Millersville University before becoming Millersville University's Mascot. A life-long cultivator of spirit! She coaches club field hockey in State College. Beth holds a Masters in Education (Bowling Green) and a B.A. Psychology (Millersville), and is a graduate of Susquenita H.S. where she played field hockey and was the school Mascot! She is completing Master Coach and International Coaching Foundation certifications in December 2021. She is married to husband Danny and is a working mother of 3; Lucas, Lilly and Delaney. 

    Janet (Heim) Egerer, Volunteer Coach,1st season

    Janet is our coach with the most certifications for lifelong health. Janet's work with the team makes everyone's bodies feel better and mind's clearer. She's a Mind and Body fitness Coach, Personal Trainer and 800hour E-RYT Yoga Educator and Teacher. She spent 4 years as a Marine Corps Semper Fit Instructor and is currently working with PSU Athletics as a Yoga Instructor. She is a State College business woman and co-owner of PYP Studio. Janet is a State College Area High School Field Hockey Alumni with a B.S. Kinesiology (Penn State). She and her husband Fred are the parents of 4, Zack, Tommy, Heidi, and Kennedy.
