Subject: Letters from the Eyrie 2/3/23

    Hello Families,

I hope you are all well. Despite our recent re-adjustment back to 5-day weeks, we are managing to wrap this week up with great energy on this snowy Friday! A few updates and reminders for you all as we prepare to enter the weekend:

    • Wednesday was World Read Aloud Day. We had real published authors zoom in to give read aloud stories to all grades and classes throughout the day. It was a wonderful experience for our community and students seemed captivated by the stories!

    • Yesterday we had a group of PSU football players visit our 4th and 5th grade classrooms to read stories as well. Students were very excited to meet these students, several of whom are starters for the Nittany Lions!

    • We have completed all of our academic benchmarking. You should be able to access results of all local assessments soon, via ParentVue. Watch for district emails with updates and instructions on how to view this information.

    • Reminder: If your child comes to school on any wheeled vehicle (bicycle, scooter, skateboard, etc.), they need to wear a helmet, per PA law. Also, please remind your child to avoid riding these vehicles on the sidewalk in front of the building where people are walking into school. We are trying to avoid any collisions, accidents, or injuries.

    • We are starting to plan for end of the year events. As we lock in dates for specific events, I will communicate with you all. For now, mark your calendars for Thursday, May 25 - we are planning to host a family picnic lunch that day if all goes as planned. More to come as that date approaches!

    •

I hope you have a warm and peaceful weekend with your families. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or if I can be helpful to you in any way.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Brigman, Principal

Subject: Update on Spring Creek Elementary Water

    Dear Parents and Guardians:

I’d like to provide you with an update on the water at Spring Creek Elementary. Since we turned off the water a couple of weeks ago because of elevated copper levels, we have been investigating the cause with the help of consultants. We also have been in contact with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Our investigation found that an electrical wire touching a copper pipe was contributing to the issue. Subsequently, we have corrected that problem. The water has been retested and deemed to be safe, according to DEP.

As an initial step, we will use the water for handwashing and kitchen operations only. Out of an abundance of caution, the water fountains will remain off while we continue to monitor water quality. Before the fountains are turned back on, we want to see safe copper levels for a sustained period. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue sending water with your children; we’ll also have water bottles available at the school.

Moving forward, we plan to implement preventative measures such as flushing procedures and increased testing. While doing so, we’ll continue to work with consultants until we’re satisfied that the problem has been completely resolved.

As always, I will provide updates as they develop. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Brigman

    Subject: Milk Jug Collection Update

    Good Morning Everyone!

I hope your long weekends and 2-hr delay morning went smoothly and safely. I am writing to let you know that the deadline for milk jug collection at SCE will be this Friday, January 20. We are still in need of some jugs, but we are rapidly approaching our needed number. Thank you to everyone who has helped with this project thus far!

Subject: Letter's from the Eyrie 1/9/23

    Dear Families,

I hope you are all well. I have a few important updates to share with you regarding the status of things at SCE and some upcoming happenings at the school. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions!

    • Regarding the water situation, the district is continuing to address this issue in as timely a manner as possible. Teams have been on site every day since my initial communication conducting tests, flushing our water system, and working to ensure that everything is running properly before returning to our normal operations. I will continue to keep you updated as I learn more. In the meantime, we will continue to have extra water bottles available and handwashing stations set up throughout the school.

    • We are entering our winter benchmarking window this week throughout SCASD. Here is a link to the standard letter sent home to families that provides information about MAP testing for students in grades 1-5 (math only for 1st grade). Students in K-3 will participate in Acadience testing, which is an individualized measure of academic progress, as well. Parents & Guardians will be provided with outcomes of benchmarking results after the completion of all student testing. For more information about district testing and benchmarking, here is the link to the page on our district’s website.

    • Our next PTO meeting will be tomorrow, January 10, from 6:00pm-7:00pm. Parents are invited to join in person in the SCE library or join remotely at the following link: meet.google.com/urj-tfhr-dqz

    • We will have in-service days this Friday, January 13, and next Monday, January 16.

Thank you all for your continued support and collaboration!

Subject: Thank You & Winter Wishes

    Dear Families,

With the winter break nearly upon us, I’d like to take a moment and thank you all for your continued support and collaboration in creating a pathway for your children to learn and grow at Spring Creek Elementary. The past several months have been joyful for me in my new role as your child’s principal and I am excited to continue growing and learning alongside my students and teachers in our journey together. This school is a special place and it is thanks to all of you that we are able to help each student meet their full potential and create lasting memories and friendships. I am truly grateful for the opportunity that has been given to me and I deeply appreciate this community.

As the calendar year comes to an end, I hope you and your loved ones are able to slow down the pace of your days and make new connections with one another. I am looking forward to spending time with my wife and three little ones in the snow, around the fire, and with our extended family. But please know that I am always here for you if you need anything over the break.

So until January greets us and classes begin once more, take some time to play and try not to blink. These days go by too quickly as it is…

    All the best,

    Paul Brigman

    Subject: Pollinator Project

    Dear SCE Families,

We are excited to announce that the work started with the Penn State Master Gardeners, under the direction of Pam Ford, many years ago at Lemont/Houserville, will again be part of the learning experience for the children of Spring Creek Elementary.  Under her leadership, and with the help of our PTO and volunteers from Penn State, our students will again be involved in community service projects aimed at enhancing the habitat of native pollinators around our school community. We will be creating a native pollinator garden that will be part of the school grounds to be used by all in our school community.

As part of that project, students in grades 3-5 will be involved in a “Winter Sowing” activity.  This activity will focus on growing pollinator-friendly plants that will be transplanted into the garden by the children of our school.

If your family uses products in these containers and you’d be willing to send them to the school, they would be greatly appreciated.  As you enter the building, we will have a collection area outside the office. Please ensure the jugs are clean and, if possible, the labels are removed.  We do not need the caps on the jugs, so there is no need to keep those.  We will begin the collection when we return to school on January 3 and collect through the 15th.  If we need to extend the collection, we will let you know.

    Thank you

Subject: Letters from the Eyrie 12/9/22

    Dear Families,

With less than two weeks left before the winter break, there is excitement in the air at SCE and much to celebrate. Students are working hard and showing kindness to one another every day. It is so wonderful to visit classrooms and see the amazing communities that have formed over the past few months. I feel incredibly lucky every day I come to work! I have just a few items to share with you all for this edition of Letters from the Eyrie:

    • The last day of school for the calendar year will be Thursday, December 22. We will return to school on Tuesday, January 3.

    • The lost and found collection will be cleared out over the break, so please stop by and collect any items that your child may have left here prior to the break.

    • There is no PTO meeting scheduled for this month.

    • There will be a number of musical experiences happening in the next two weeks, including the morning choir practices, featured performances in our lobby as students arrive at school, and our all-school winter sing on 12/20. Unfortunately we cannot invite family members in for the all-school sing - this is a students only event.

    • Please remember, for any day-of changes to your child’s dismissal, please call our main office so that our attendance secretary is aware of these changes. Please send an email as well, but a phone call should be made first.

Thank you all and have a wonderful weekend!

    Subject: Progress Reports

    Dear Families,

We are pleased to share that your child’s first progress report card is available in ParentVue today, Monday, December 5 at 10:00 am. In order to view the progress report this year please log in to ParentVUE. Then, on the left-hand menu, please select the “Documents” option. An electronic copy of your child’s progress report will be posted here.

Please note that the “Report Card” section of ParentVUE is only used in secondary, and no information will be displayed here for elementary students.

If you have questions regarding your child’s report card please contact your child’s teacher.

If you do not see your child’s report card in ParentVUE by Monday after 10:00 am, or you are having trouble accessing ParentVUE, please contact itsupport@scasd.org.

Students who attend our Virtual Academy will not receive the SCASD progress report and progress will not be uploaded into ParentVue. Parents of students who attend VA can view their progress through the FUEL system. If you have children involved in our Virtual Academy and have questions about their progress, please reach out to their SCASD teacher who can provide more information to you.

    Subject: Warm Winter Gear Reminder

    Hello Families,

With the temperatures dropping into near frigid conditions lately, I want to send a friendly reminder to you all about sending your children to school with warm winter gear. Please be sure that your child has a warm coat, a winter hat, and gloves each day when coming to school so that they can participate in outdoor recess safely. If you are in need of any of these items and would accept assistance from us, please let me or our school counselor, Heather Baney, know and we will be happy to provide you with whatever you need.

Also, please be sure to check our lost and found collection, which is located in the front lobby of the school. Any unclaimed items will be donated or redistributed to students in need over the winter break.

As always, let me know if I can be helpful to your family in any way!

    Sincerely,

    Subject: SCE Winter Fundraising Opportunity

    Hello Families!

I hope you all had a restful and peaceful break with your loved ones. I will be sending out a number of updates in the coming weeks, but for now please see the invitation below from our school's Outreach Committee:

    Dear Spring Creek Families,

As part of our school’s outreach, we are inviting all members of our school community to participate in a quarter donation drive for the Centre Safe and Centre House. Both are local organizations that support individuals and families in need in Centre County. One of the most requested items is quarters. In addition to quarters, both places mentioned a need for household cleaning supplies such as small laundry detergent and dish liquid soap.

Beginning December 5, there will be containers in each hallway and at the entrance of our school for your child to drop off donations. All donations should be sent in by Wednesday, December 21.

Thank you for your continued support and help.

    Hello Families!

I hope you have all been enjoying the unseasonably warm weather and the final days of the beautiful fall foliage. As we wrap up another great week at SCE, I'd like to send out a few updates and friendly reminders.

    • Monday, 11/7/22 is school picture make-up day. The photographer will be on site until 11:00am if your child is in need of retakes or if they missed the first picture day.
    • The next PTO meeting is Tuesday, 11/8/22 at 6:00pm in the SCE library. I hope to see you there!
    • Also next Tuesday, we will be exercising a Secure in Place drill. For this drill, I will make an announcement instructing students to remain in their classrooms with doors closed until the end of the drill. The purpose of this drill is to keep hallways and open areas clear to prepare for any event in which we need these areas to remain open and accessible (i.e. if there was a medical emergency in which a professional response was needed). Instruction in the classroom will continue as normal during this drill.
    • Daylight savings time kicks into effect this Sunday, so please be sure to adjust all of your clocks and routines accordingly.

I will keep you all updated as any new news surfaces. Thank you for your continued collaboration and partnership in your children's education. Have a great weekend!

    Subject: Helping Hawks

    Hello Families,

Please see the message below from our school counselor regarding our Helping Hawks program:

Spring Creek Elementary is reaching out to see what families may need support or would be willing to provide support during the winter months. Support may look like: snow clothing (jacket, boots, gloves/hats), cold weather clothing (long pants, sneakers, sweatshirts etc.), age appropriate books or family board games.

This is not required, but if you submit a response someone from the school may reach out to you depending on your responses. HERE is the link to the survey.

    Thank you!

    Subject: It's on! Parade Confirmation

    Good Morning Everyone,

We have agreed as a district to proceed with the Fall Harvest Celebration Parades at all elementary schools this afternoon. SCE will plan to begin its parade at approximately 1:30pm, at which time we will exit the K-1 hallway and head up the hill to Fogelman Field. We will complete one loop around the field before returning to the building. If the weather conditions look highly unfavorable at 1:30pm, we may slightly delay the start time or reroute our parade to stay closer to the building. Should this occur, I will send a text alert and email out to everyone via school messenger and we will make an announcement on the PA system, which can be heard outside of the school.

Please remember that the school bus lot must be cleared by 2:00pm if you choose to park there. I look forward to seeing many of you this afternoon!

    Subject: Tomorrow - Parade?

    Hello Parents and Guardians,

First of all, I'd like to give a huge thanks to everyone who was able to participate in this morning's Cycle to School event. It was a great day to roll into school with a crew of enthusiastic cyclists! I hope to keep this initiative going as long as weather permits us to do so, so stay tuned for the next event date.

Regarding tomorrow, the weather forecast is not looking favorable. But we have not yet made any official decisions on whether or not we need to cancel the outdoor parade. This will be a district-level decision and I will notify you all as soon as I know the decision. If we are able to proceed with the parade, we will need to bump back our start time slightly. The updated plan is to exit the rear of the building at 1:30pm instead of 1:15pm. Everything else will remain the same for the day. I will keep you posted with any new information that surfaces in the next 24 hours.

    Have a great day!

    Hello Families!

I hope you are all well. This has been a full week of fun and learning at SCE. I hope your children are sharing their experiences with you at home. Teachers have been working hard to provide valuable experiences to all and I continue to be so grateful for being a part of this community.

A few quick reminders and updates:

    • Next week we will have parent teacher conferences. Hopefully you are all signed up and ready to go, but please be sure to reach out to your child's teacher if you still need to make arrangements for this.
    • In addition to our Fall Harvest Parade next Wednesday, we will also celebrate Apple Crunch Day at SCE. Free apples will be provided to all classrooms to add a little extra celebration to the season.
    • With weather looking good for early in the week, I would like to plan on hosting another Cycle to School day for all interested students and families next Tuesday, October 25. We will once again meet at Spring Creek Park to assemble and depart. Last time, we arrived to school a bit earlier than anticipated so this time we will plan to leave at 7:40am. I will let you know if plans change for any reason, but I hope to see as many of you there as possible!

As always, please let me know if I can be helpful to you in any way. Happy Fall and have a great weekend!

Subject: SCE Fall Harvest Parade 10/26/22

    Hello SCE Families!

I would like to take a moment to share some updated information regarding our upcoming Fall Harvest Parade next week.

FALL HARVEST PARADE - This will occur on Wednesday, Oct. 26th, at 1:15pm. (weather permitting).  The event will be held on Fogleman Field, behind the school. Students will depart the rear exit of the school at 1:15pm and will complete one circuit around the pathway before re-entering the building at approximately 1:35pm. Parents and families are invited to line the path around the field to cheer on their little hawks as we parade around the field in celebration of the season.

If there is inclement weather, there will be no outdoor parade and we will hold a small indoor parade for students, but we will not be able to accomodate families in the building.

Parents are welcome to park in the school parking lot, the bus lot, and in any adjacent legal parking spots. However, the bus lot must be completely cleared by 2:00pm so that buses can park on time for end-of-day departure.

    • Costumes - Costumes are always optional. If your child wishes to wear a costume, they will be given a brief amount of time to change shortly before class celebrations begin - costumes, make up, wigs, hats, etc. need not be worn to school.  Costumes should be able to be put on independently by students.  Please be sure costumes are age and weather appropriate.

    • Some grade levels may ask students to wear a simple costume for the day and not change at school.  Your child’s teacher will communicate this information if it is relevant.

    • Note: inflatable costumes are permitted but will only be allowed to stay inflated during our outdoor parade.  Also, please remember our district weapons policy - weapons of any kind, even replicas, are not permitted.  For example, if your child dresses like a pirate, s/he cannot have a fake sword or a stick representing a sword or knife.

    • When choosing a costume, please refrain from ghoulish or inappropriate costumes such as a demon, bloody monsters, grim reaper, too grown up, etc., which could be offensive and scary.

    • Class Celebrations - Small class celebrations will take place in classrooms. Please watch for notification from your child’s teacher regarding any specific requests for donations.  Celebrations should include a balance of nutritional foods.

    • After the parade - Students will return to their classrooms immediately following the parade. If you wish to sign out your child afterward, please follow normal early dismissal protocols, including the submission of a note to attendance (this can be completed in Parentvue).  This is the only way your child will be permitted to leave early for the day.

    • Opt Out Procedure - As always, participation in events like the Fall Harvest Parade is optional. We respect the wishes and beliefs of our families, so if you’d prefer that your child not participate in these activities, please notify your child’s teacher, and alternative activities will be made available for your child during this time.

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Thank you for your continued support!

    Hello Families,

Just one quick update for you all today - We are sending home MAP test results with students today, so be sure to check your child's backpack for an envelope with this information. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher with any questions you have about this information. We will be in touch with families (if you haven't heard from us already) if we have anything specific we want to discuss with you prior to parent teacher conferences.

Mr. Chad Rockey will be leading the event and ensuring that everyone can cross Houserville Road safely. Thanks so much to everyone who has contributed to making this year's Fun Run happen! As a reminder, we will not have school on Friday, due to an in-service day. Please plan accordingly.

Subject Letters from the Eyrie 9/30/22

    Dear Families,

Happy (slightly belated) official start to the fall season! The crisp autumn weather is rolling in and there is a lot happening at Spring Creek Elementary to share with you all!

Next week, we will be celebrating our first Spirit Week of the year. Here is the daily spirit schedule:

    • Monday - Jersey Monday (favorite sports jersey)

    • Tuesday - Comfy Cozy Tuesday (wear your best sleepwear)

    • Wednesday - Wacky Wednesday (wear your crazy hair and/or crazy socks)

    • Thursday - Fun Run Thursday (wear Maroon & Gray)

On Thursday, in addition to our annual Fun Run, we will have two other celebratory events:

    • Before school, any interested student and parent/s are invited to join a group of staff & faculty, myself included, on a Cycle to School Day from Spring Creek Park to the school, departing at 7:30am (weather permitting). *This is a bicycle only event. Interested cyclists should plan to meet our crew in the parking lot near the playground at 7:25am. We will depart, crossing Houserville Road together, and ride to the school in the spirit of adventure and good old fashioned morning exercise :) No sign up required, just show up.

    • At 10:00am, we will have our SCASD media team take an all-school photograph of us in the courtyard, sporting our school spirit garb.

Fun Run - You should have received information about the Fun Run already from our PTO. This will take place Thursday afternoon and we are so excited to see as many of you there as possible. If you haven’t yet made a donation to this cause and would like to do so, there is still time to help us reach our goal. Thanks so much to everyone who is able to contribute their time and generosity!

Next Thursday evening is the State High Homecoming Parade at 6:00pm, departing from the High School and traveling to Memorial Field. Our 5th grade students will be building and riding a float for the event, so please try to come cheer them on, along with the rest of the parade participants!

Finally, there will be no school next Friday so please plan accordingly.

Thank you all for your continued support and collaboration. As always, please let me know if I can be of service to you in any way. Stay safe and warm.

    Subject: IM Swimming

Hello 4th and 5th Grade Parents,

If you signed your child up for IM swimming this fall and have not received any communication from our school, your child is registered and you can plan to have them begin participating next week on September 27, 28, and 29. The only families who would have been contacted are those who were put on a wait list. If your child is participating in IM swimming, please plan to send them to school with a swimsuit on swimming days and plan to pick them up at the high school between 4:45pm and 5:00pm.

Let me know if you have any questions and have a great day!

    Subject: Announcement Clarification

    Hello Families,

I hope you all had a weekend full of meaningful connections and experiences. A quick FYI for you as we look ahead to next month's parent-teacher conferences: I mentioned both at BTSN and in my parent email last week that conferences will be held the week of October 24-28, which is accurate. To clarify, however, October 27 & 28 are days devoted to these conferences, in which students do not attend school as usual. Some teachers may choose to offer time slots to families after school M-W of that week, but they are not required to do so. Please watch for communications from your child's teacher about available time slots to meet during that week, as each teacher's meeting schedule will be unique. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. Feel free to contact me with any questions and have a good week.

    Hello Families!

Another week at Spring Creek Elementary is almost in the books. Things continue to go very well here and I hope your children are loving their experiences at school this year. A huge thank you to everyone who was able to join us at Back to School Night! If you were not able to attend, my key reminders were:

    • Picture day is this upcoming Monday, September 19. The make up date will be November 7. In case you still need to sign up online, go to mylifetouch.com and enter our school code, which is EVTW7SR6Q.

    • Effective October 1, all students will have access to free breakfast at school if they choose to partake.

    • There will be no school on October 7, which is an in-service day.

    • Parent - teacher conferences will be held the week of October 24. Look for communication from your child’s teacher about sign up options.

    • We are planning on holding our fall celebration day, including an optional costume parade on October 26 in the afternoon. Details to come!

    • There will be no school on October 27 and 28.

    • We have a number of Lost & Found items in our front lobby. If you are missing any of your child’s apparel, water bottles, or lunch boxes, encourage them to check out our current collection and take their items home.

Next week, most likely on Tuesday, we will hold our first required severe weather drill of the year. This will involve me making an announcement over the intercom and instructing classrooms to move to a safe location near their classroom for a short duration. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to reach out to me.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
