    Summer PE/Health at State High

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

    I just wanted to let you know that the site to register for summer Health & PE courses is now updated. To learn more about or register for a summer course please go to this link. At the bottom of the page you will see a link to Register & Pay. Once you pay for the course, please forward me a copy of your receipt or confirmation email. Once I receive the receipt, I will drop the Health and/or PE course from your child's schedule and it will open up additional space for another elective of study hall. 

     

    If your child would like to do Virtual Health or PE during the school year they should fill out a Course Request Change Form indicating they would like to drop Phys Ed 9 (S532) and/or Wellness 9 (S537) and replace it with Virtual Phys Ed 9 (V532) or Virtual Wellness 9 (V537).  Please keep in mind that in order to take virtual courses during the school year, students need to have a Study Hall in their school to do so. Virtual courses taken during the school are free of charge. The final day to request virtual courses during the school year is February 13th. 

     

    If your child has any questions regarding these options please encourage them to stop by the Counseling Office and speak with a counselor.

    Tides Support Group
    Tides, a local grief support, awareness, and education program, will be offering in-school grief support groups for any interested MNMS student who has experienced the death of a loved one. Facilitated by Tides program and school counseling staff, groups will begin with five weeks of sessions covering coping skills, sharing feelings, and sharing memories. We will use books, crafts and other resources and engage in a variety of activities on the topics of grief and loss.

     

    The group will meet on: 2/ 15, 2/22, 3/1, 3/15, 3/22  from 3:00-3:40pm (period 9)

     Important - Course Registration Process for Students



    February 1, 2023,

     

    Dear Students and Families,

     

    I would like to update you on the course registration process for the 2023-24 school year. Teachers have made course recommendations, and you can view them in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. Below you will find links to instructions on how to view teacher recommendations, enter course requests, and request changes to locked course recommendations. These procedures for course registration will give students ample time to connect with teachers, counselors, and their families about their course selections for the upcoming school year.

     

    Please note: Students who will be enrolling in the Virtual Academy for the 2023-24 school year will be given instructions for a separate course request entry process via the Virtual Academy in late February.  

     

    Schedules will be built this spring, and students can view their schedules in StudentVUE in early June. There will be a period of time after schedules are released when students will be able to submit requests to modify their schedules prior to the start of school. 

     

    Course Selection Dates 2023 - 24 

     

    February 1, 2023 Students can view teacher recommendations for 2023-24 courses in ParentVUE /StudentVUE

    February 1 - 13, 2023 Course request entry open to students/parents via ParentVUE/StudentVUE

    Are you interested in playing Ice Hockey?   



    The State College Ice Hockey Club is exploring interest in forming a second Middle School team.  We have scheduled tryouts for Thursday, January 26 at 5:30pm in Pegula - enter through gate C.  Be sure that you bring a water bottle, both a light and a dark jersey, and all necessary hockey equipment.  There will be no charge to tryout.

     

    This program is funded by the participating players - costs for this year will be approximately $300 or less.

     

    If you are interested, please contact Cory Cunningham (cdc14@scasd.org) and request a Player Interest Form.  In addition, please provide Cory with answers to the following questions:

     

    1. Will you be able to attend practice on Friday evenings at about 6:30?

    Good afternoon,

     

    We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing winter break with family and friends.  As we move through January and into the second semester, the staff and administration at MNMS are hoping to shore up an issue we have been having with students and their team-colored lanyards with IDs.

     

    Students need their lanyard and ID to use as their hall pass for leaving a classroom, particularly to use the bathroom. Every student was provided a lanyard at the beginning of the school year. Many students are leaving their lanyards at home or have even lost their lanyards without replacing them. Students have the ability to come to the main office and receive a temporary replacement lanyard for the day to use as their pass. This is becoming a constant situation for a large part of our student body. This is coupled with some recent vandalism in the stalls, lingering in the hallways, and missing large chunks of class time. We want to ensure the safety of our students and are unable to do so without easily identifying students in the hallways. 

     

    Starting January 17th, students will be provided a reset and will be given a new lanyard if they don’t have one. After this reset, students will only be permitted three temporary passes and then will be issued a lunch detention if they do not have their lanyard when requesting to sign out. Students will go to the main office to fill out an electronic form notifying us that they are in need of a temporary lanyard, and our office staff will be keeping track of the amount of temporary passes each student is getting. We will reset the three passes with each marking period. As a reminder, we do have lanyards for purchase in the office for $2. If your student has lost their lanyard, please help them to look at home and in their backpack before purchasing a new one.

    I wanted to let you know that we will be doing our MAP testing on the following dates:

     

    Wednesday, January 18 (Day 5) - Math Test
    Thursday, January 19 (Day 6)  - ELA Test

     

    During these two days we will use a 3 Hour Delay Schedule.   We will test during the first three hours in the student’s Period ⅚ odd class and then go through the class periods.  Please take your time and do your best on the test.  You have plenty of time to complete the test within the 3 hours.

    Dear Families,

     

    Throughout this school year, our staff has been actively preparing to welcome the Class of 2027 to State High this fall.  We would like to partner with you to provide your child with a successful transition from middle school to high school.  Parents and guardians are cordially invited to attend our upcoming Educational Program Parent/Guardian Night Showcase to receive information about course offerings and procedures for scheduling courses for the upcoming 2023-24 school year.  This evening is designed for parents/guardians.  Student tours of the high school and career programs have already occurred. 

     

    We will meet as a large group in the Performing Arts Auditorium where parents will learn important information about scheduling and graduation requirements.   Following this session,  parents will have the opportunity to explore the State College Area High School displays and talk with staff members.  Counselors, department coordinators, high school principals, Delta Program Director Dr. Jon Downs, and Career and Technical Center teachers will be available to answer individual questions about our course content and offerings.     Snowsports Information

    January 3, 2023

     

    Attention Tussey IM participants:

     

    Our first IM snowsports session of the year is rapidly approaching (Wed., Jan 11). Here are some important details to know as we get started. Please go over this information with your child/children.

     

    1. In order for the district to arrange for our transportation this year I need to have an early count of how many students plan to ride the bus each week. I will need this count by Monday, for each Wednesday trip. I believe the easiest way to gather this information is to send out a very short Google form for each week. It's extremely important that you submit the form for weeks that your child/children plan to ride the bus over to Tussey. If we find ourselves in a situation where we don't have enough seats for the bus ride to Tussey we will prioritize seating based on who responded to the Google form for the week (ie, those who responded to the form get priority over those who didn't). I would really like to avoid a situation where your child/children will not be allowed on the bus due to lack of seats, so please make submitting these forms a priority when you receive them.

     

    Here's the form for our first week, Jan. 11. From now on I would like to avoid having to rely on Mr. Ishler when sending out these communications, so I'm asking you to include the email address/s that you use the most. Once again, I can't overstate how important it is this year that I have an accurate count for how many students would like to ride the bus to Tussey each week.

     

    2. Please review the information about how the badges will be working this year. Tussey is doing things differently, so those of you that have participated in the past need to make sure you understand the differences. The information can be found on pg 1 of the Tussey IM PacketI highly recommend you read all of page 1, except for the first paragraph.

     

    3. Those of you that will be renting equipment from Tussey should also look at the information on pg. 2 of the Tussey IM Packet. This process is also different this year, so make sure you check it out. Tussey is also asking that everyone wear their shoes to the rental room (don't go in just socks).

     

    4. Also new this year, Tussey will be using designated pick up locations for each school (see pg. 9 of the Tussey IM Packet ). The designated location for MNMS is the cafeteria.

     

    5. It was quite a while ago that I sent out the initial communication about our program this year. Please take a quick look at this refresher before we get started.

     

    6. Here are a few more details I would like to share.

    • Equipment can be transported to school on the bus, and can be stored at school during the day. Students who bring equipment to school should take it to Mr. Haushalter when they arrive (starting at 8:15). Mr. Haushalter will be in front of the counseling office.
    • Equipment should be picked up as quickly as possible at the end of the day so we can get the buses loaded, and get over to Tussey. The buses will be on the flag pole side of the building.
    • When the buses arrive at Tussey we will be letting the students who are taking a lesson that day get off the bus first (lessons may start as early as 4:30).
    • There will be chaperones on the slopes at all times, and we will make sure there's a chaperone in the lodge as well. The chaperones this year will be Mr. Haushalter, Mrs. Barger, Ms. Turley, Ms. Hull, and Mr. Aungst. If you have any questions, or you need anything, please look for a chaperone. Even if you end up finding one from PFMS or the High school they will be able to help you locate one of the chaperones from MNMS.

    Good morning!

     

    Mount Nittany Middle School is providing two different after-school options for students that need a little additional assistance with schoolwork and/or a place and time to complete homework. 

     
    Our Homework Club will be available every Monday and Wednesday from 3:45pm to 6:15pm on regularly scheduled school days. This provides a place for students to work independently on their homework/classwork under the supervision of school staff members. 

    Our After School Tutoring (AST) program will be available every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45pm to 6:15pm on regularly scheduled school days. This program is led by our experienced and certified team member, Mrs. Yoder. She offers a variety of content skills ranging from K-12 and works closely with the students during the program. The focus is on learning content. 
     
    Caregivers may pick up their student anytime within that time frame, or students can ride the late bus home which arrives at MNMS at 6:15. We follow the district dismissals for weather and would cancel if this is announced. 
     
    If your student is not able to attend after being signed up, please email Mrs. Yoder at vls15@scasd.org to let us know prior to the end of the school day. If your student doesn't attend and no contact from the parent/guardian has been received, a phone call will be made to ensure the student's whereabouts.

    Tryouts for the Mount Nittany Boys' Basketball team have been updated. The new tryout dates are as follows:

    Please have your child registered in family ID along with his concussion testing complete.

    Secondary report cards will be available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE by 9am Monday (11/6). In order to view the report cards this year please login to ParentVUE. Then, on the left hand menu, please select the “Documents” option. Your child’s report card will be uploaded here in a PDF format for you to view by selecting it.


    If you have questions regarding your child’s report card please contact your child’s building.


    If you do not see your child’s report card in ParentVUE by Monday morning, or you are having trouble accessing ParentVUE, please contact itsupport@scasd.org.

     

    On Wednesday, we will be exercising a Secure in Place drill. For this drill, we will make an announcement instructing students to remain in their classrooms with doors closed until the end of the drill. The purpose of this drill is to keep hallways and open areas clear to prepare for any event in which we need these areas to remain open and accessible (i.e. if there was a medical emergency in which a professional response was needed). Instruction in the classroom will continue as normal during this drill.

    8th Grade High School Tour

    Hello MNMS 8th Grade Families

    We are reaching out to share exciting news about State High’s Career and Technical Center (CTC) and upcoming 8th grade tours.  Our CTC provides engaging, academically rigorous, and career-focused courses in a wide variety of content areas. These programs provide a stable roadmap for students to navigate many educational options and prepare them to successfully transition into post-secondary education, professional careers, and lifelong learning.     Career and Technical Education (CTE) in Pennsylvania offers students the opportunity to develop critical skills through a combination of classes and hands-on learning experiences, which allow them to apply academics to real-world problems. See the PDE website and watch this promotion video for more information related to CTE.

    High school is the perfect time to explore new opportunities and develop valuable experience. Students are encouraged to research potential college majors and consider future careers by investigating the many courses offered through the CTC at State High. As part of this effort, we are providing an opportunity for all 8th grade students to participate in a field trip to visit State High’s CTC.  The specific dates and times are listed below for each middle school.

    During this tour, students will be led by our Little Lion Ambassadors in small groups to tour all 14 of our CTC, Tech Ed, and IB classrooms.  During this tour students will observe program presentations and have an opportunity to ask questions about our programs, teachers, and courses.  Students will participate in many fun and exciting activities, while also experiencing our state of the art equipment and technology. 

    Specific Tour Dates: Both middle schools will divide their 8th grade students into two groups and assign students to attend on one of the following dates and the tour will last from 9:12 to 12:25.  This information along with other details and a permission form will be shared with students and guardians prior to tours.

    • Last week of January - students will receive a presentation from a High School Counselor who will explain the scheduling process and answer any questions you have.

    First week of February - It is our goal that our student scheduling system will be operational in early February and students can begin to request courses for next year.

    Behavior and Emotional Screening

     

    Hello Parents/Guardians,

     

    Recently, your child (excluding requested exemptions) completed the Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS) self-rating scale. It’s important to note that the BESS is not a comprehensive diagnostic assessment, rather a screening tool used to determine a student’s risk of developing emotional and/or behavior problems that may require interventions, if these have not already been identified.     Good afternoon, everyone!  We are getting closer to Halloween next week, and many are super excited about costumes and candy. We wanted to send out a reminder about wearing costumes at school since some students have asked about whether or not they are able to wear them next Monday.  Students are able to wear costumes if they choose, but we have a few reminders:

     
    - No inflatable costumes
    - Costumes should allow your face to be seen
    - Costumes should meet our school standards of dress
    - Students should respect others by not wearing costumes of other cultures. 
    - Costumes should not include any weapons per our district policy, including replicas or replacements.  For example, if your child dresses like a pirate, they cannot have a fake sword or a stick representing a sword or knife.
     
    We recognize that everyone has a different perspective on celebrating or not celebrating Halloween.  Thank you for helping us make this day comfortable for everyone by following our reminders.

    Welcome 6th-grade families to intramurals at Mount Nittany Middle School!

     

    It has been a few years since we have been able to offer intramural sports at the middle school, and I would like to give families some feedback about the survey our 6th-graders took. This will also have some information about the intramurals that will be offered in the fall and again in the spring. 

     

    First of all, thank you to everyone who took the time to respond - it was very helpful when making decisions about what activities to offer. The two most popular ones were table tennis and kickball, so we will offer table tennis in November/December and kickball will be in February. Skiing will take place in January, the same as it has been in the past.

     

    The dates for the spring session will be announced as the time gets closer. 

     

    The dates for table tennis are Tuesday, November 15 and 22 and December 6 and 13.  These days and dates were chosen because of staffing availability. Intramurals will be held on these dates, starting immediately after school dismisses at 3:40 and will run until 5:00.  Students MUST be picked up promptly and we ask that you check in with one of the coaches when picking up your student so that we know that they are getting home safely. If your student will require the late bus home, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can make arrangements with the Transportation department.

    Hello parents, guardians, and staff.

     

    MNE and MNMS will co-host a clothing drive at Mount Nittany Middle School the weekend of November 4-6th.  The drive will be hosted in the middle school cafeteria.  We would like to invite you to consider helping in two ways:

    • Clean out those closets, dressers, and storage lockers, and drop off your clothing donations to the middle school cafeteria on Friday from 4:00 - 6:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 - 4:00 PM.  Feel free to share this information with friends and neighbors.  Goodwill has provided some bags to place the donated clothing.  If you are interested in some bags, please have your students ask their homeroom teachers and we will deliver them as soon as possible. 

    • Consider donating some of your time over the weekend to help us sort and fold clothes, and staff the drive.  We will also need help bagging all remaining clothes at 3:00 PM on Sunday. 

    All families from the area may SHOP FOR FREE on Saturday from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM and again on Sunday from 12:00 - 3:00 PM.  Please spread the word with any friends or family in our community who may be interested!

    MNMS Yearbook Information

    Dear MNMS Families, 

    Picture make-ups (for any student who was absent on September 12th) and retakes (any student unhappy with their original picture) are scheduled for Wednesday, October 26th from 8:30 - 9:30am. 

    If interested in retakes, please have your student bring their original pictures with them on October 26th to return to the company. Students may be asked why they disliked their original photo to ensure the retake meets their expectations.

    Purchasing Pictures

    Parents may pre-order their pictures online with Lifetouch using the Picture ID: EVT7JMBHC. School staff will not be collecting the payment envelope if sent in with your child; order packages will be given to the photographer on the day of the photo shoot. Remember to have your child bring the payment envelope to the photo shoot on the day indicated. Packages cannot be ordered without payment either in the envelope OR online.

    Group Pictures

    Starting at 9:50, group pictures will be taken of some of the MNMS activities, sports, and clubs. Clubs who have not started yet will be taken by a yearbook staff member in the winter or spring.     MNMS PTSO Fun Run Update

    Hello MNM Families,

     

    We would first like to say THANK YOU to all who donated items or helped at the water table.  The winners have been announced and we are in the process of closing everything out so we get our check from The Get Movin’ Crew.  We didn’t meet our goal this year, but we did raise more than $17,000.  The overall monies we receive back however will be less because of fees that will be deducted from The Get Movin’ Crew.  The majority of these funds will be used to help cut the cost of fields trips.

    Tides Support Group
    Tides, a local grief support, awareness, and education program, will be offering in-school grief support groups for any interested MNMS student who has experienced the death of a loved one. Facilitated by Tides program and school counseling staff, groups will begin with five weeks of sessions covering coping skills, sharing feelings, and sharing memories. We will use books, crafts and other resources and engage in a variety of activities on the topics of grief and loss.

     

    The group will meet on: 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16 from 2:50-3:40pm. Students will be dismissed from their 8th period course 10 minutes early to maximize group time.

    PV, MNE and MNMS have Partial Power

    Dear Parents and Guardians:

     

    At approximately 10 a.m. this morning, the power partially went out at Mount Nittany Middle School, Mount Nittany Elementary and Panorama Village Administrative Center. Administrators worked with staff to determine next steps and how to keep operating through the school day. Right now, there is sufficient lighting throughout the buildings and classes can continue at this time.

     

    Lunch is being provided from other district schools. Although water for hand washing is not available in a few areas, we have placed hand sanitizer where necessary. However, drinking water is available.

     

    Should this status change, we will let you know, but as of now, we have no plans to modify the school day.

    MNMS PTSO Fun Run Update

    We have another fun run update to provide to you!
     
    We have announced our winners for the week!  Congratulations to them!  If you student has not been one of the winners, they have until Friday at midnight to raise the most for the week.  Please make sure your student is registered.  You can also share their webpages on your social media pages (Facebook and Twitter) and through email or text.  If you would prefer to send in a cash or check, you can do that too!  Just make sure your students first and last name is on the envelope and also their homeroom teachers name so that credit is given to the correct group.  Please make sure checks are made out to MNMS PTSO.

    The top 6th grade classroom is in the lead by $370, for the 7th grade, the top class is in the lead by just $5, and for 8th grade the top class is in the lead by more than $600.  Remember if each class meets their classroom goal we will reach our overall goal, but we need your help!  The classroom who raises the most from each grade will win a pizza party!

    1. Make sure that your student is wearing sneakers.  We want all toes to be safe!
    2. Have your student bring a water bottle if they want.  We will have a water table and will provide students with water and a fruit snack after their time has concluded.
    3. Come watch your student unwind if you can.  You DO NOT need clearances to watch.

    Now that we are halfway through the first marking period, this is a good time to check in with your child about school and specifically, the progress that is happening in each class. Attached to this message is a parent guide that explains how to use ParentVUE to find out what is happening in your child's classes and to view class grades. Please note that the guide is written using screenshots from the web version but the same information can be found in the mobile version of ParentVUE. 

     

    If you want to have a conversation with your child about classwork, here are two questions that could be used as conversation starters:

    • What have you accomplished this year so far that you are proud of?
    • How are you going to use this experience to be better next time?

    MNMS PTSO Fun Run Update

     

    Another fun run update to for you!
     
    As of this morning, we have raised over $10,000 or 50% of our total goal!  Our hope is to get to at least 80% by the end of the weekend to ensure we meet our overall goal.  Again, if you have not registered your student, you can still do that.  Once they are registered be sure to share their webpage on your Facebook or Twitter pages and via email or text.
     
    Tonight at midnight is the deadline for a chance to win the prizes for the week.  We currently have a 3-way tie for 6th grade.  For 7th grade, there is a 5-way tie and for 8th grade the person who has raised the most is ahead by about $50.  At midnight tonight, if there is still a tie, we are going to give the prize to the person who made it to that amount first.  Help break the ties by sharing your students webpage or donate just a little bit if you think you are part of the tiebreaker!  We will do another prize give away to the people who raise the most starting tomorrow through next Friday, so if you haven’t won anything yet, you still have time!  Also, remember that you have a chance to win a gift card.  The students parent/guardian will win the gift card if their students page has the most shares, so SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!
     
    CLASSROOM UPDATE!
    For 6th grade, the class that has raised the most so far is up by $365.  The difference for 7th grade is just $30 and for 8th grade the difference is also $365.  If your students classroom meets their classroom goal, we will, no doubt beat our overall goal and they will win a pizza party!  Remember these funds that are raised are going to be used for many things.  The majority, about 90%, of these funds are going to be used to cut the cost of field trips.  The remaining money will be used for teacher appreciation week, teacher mini-grants (which also helps the students), and so much more, so let’s continue working as a team and reach our goal! 
     
    Regardless of how much your student has raised, they will get to participate in the fun!  One hundred percent of students get to participate, so let’s have 100% of students have at least one donation, regardless of the amount.  Every little bit will help and bring the cost down just a little more!

    Supervision for Middle Students at High School Events

    Dear Middle School Families,

     

    With the start of cool fall weather comes the return of one of our favorite activities- football games!  We all are excited to cheer on our SCASD teams as they compete over the course of the seasons.  Currently, our high school team’s record is 4-0, and we’ve been thrilled to host opponents Williamsport and Hollidaysburg at Memorial Field.  Our next home high school football game is this Friday, September 23rd. The Little Lions will look to go 5-0 on the season as they host Central Dauphin.

     

    As we team together with our high school administration, security guards, the HS and MS  school resource officers, and our families, we feel it is important to remind everyone of some important expectations and guidelines: 

     

    1. Middle school and elementary aged students are to be accompanied by a supervising adult. We ask those adults to be on hand to help supervise the children in their care.

    2. A new designated MS Student Section will be in place beginning next Friday, 9/23, for the Central Dauphin game. (see graphic) 

    3. We are asking that all MS students in attendance occupy that student section if they are not in reserved seats or general admission seats with their family members. They may leave the designated MS student area to use the restroom or visit the concession stand, but it is expected that they return to their student section (much like our HS students currently do). On-site supervision will be asking students to move if they are congregating in the plaza area.

    4. Remember that no backpacks, bags, umbrellas, balls or outside food & drink are permitted in the stadium.

    5. Also, there is no re-entry.  If a student leaves the stadium, they are not permitted to re-enter without purchasing another ticket. 

    6. Online ticket sales can be found at the Athletic Website.  Year-long student passes are just $28.00. Family passes (up to a family of 6) are just $93.00.  These passes get you into any regular season ticketed PIAA event all year long. 

     

    As you prepare your student(s) to potentially attend these games, please also remind them that any misbehavior on school property or at a school-sponsored event could result in consequences per the 6-12 Code of Conduct at their respective middle school.  We are representatives of our schools and district at all times. We will spend some time reviewing our ROAR expectations with students and how those apply at athletic events. This is what we will share for you to review and discuss with your students.

    P.A.W.S. Project, providing assistance with schoolwork

    The P.A.W.S.(Providing Assistance With Schoolwork) Project is a Nittany Lions Read/Nittany Lions Count Program dedicated to offering “homework help and support” to the children and families of the surrounding communities.  The P.A.W.S. Project employs eligible and qualified Penn State Students to engage remotely with third through eighth grade children to provide individualized homework support in the areas of literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies.  The Community Service Federal Work-Study Office within the Office of Student Aid at The Penn State University – University Park, coordinates the P.A.W.S. Program.  Utilizing Zoom, program staff will review the child’s homework assignments, assessing and strategizing with the child to establish a manageable approach to the child’s homework success.  Throughout the engagement, program staff seek to determine areas of both strength and need and encourage/assist the child to not only complete their assignments, but also to comprehend the topics or concepts more fully.
