Overview Physical Education

The State College Area School District strives to provide instructional programs and services that contribute to the quality of life. Physical Education involves the learning of skills, the acquisition of knowledge and the development of attitudes through movement. Physical education is that part of the total process of education which utilizes games, sport, aquatics, dance, and health fitness activities to help the individual achieve the goals of education. Well-defined programs of physical education provide a systemic progression of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor experiences as our students pass through various developmental stages during their tenure in school.

Physical Education:

Elementary Physical Education:  All students in Kindergarten through 5th grade will receive 50 minutes of Physical Education every 5 day cycle taught by a certified health and physical education teacher.

Middle School Physical Education:  All students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade will receive 2 class periods of physical education during every 6 day cycle taught by a certified health and physical education teacher.

High School Physical Education:  All students in grade 9-12 are required to successfully complete 1.5 credits of physical education to meet the SCASD graduation requirement.

Physical activity is critical to the development and maintenance of good health. The goal of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. Every course and unit provided within our curriculum is linked to both the Pennsylvania State Standards and the National Standards for Physical Education.  Physical activity has also been shown to increase classroom learning.
