Optional assignment requests

Optional Assignment Requests

Each elementary and middle school has an associated attendance area. Students enrolling into Kindergarten through 8th grade are assigned to a school based on the attendance area in which they live.  If a family would like their child to attend a different school than the one for the attendance area in which they live, they must request this by submitting an Optional Assignment Request to the Registration Office.

Below are several scenarios where an optional assignment request may be appropriate.

Family Moves to Different Attendance Area

When a family moves from one attendance area to another within the district, the child will be transferred to the school serving their new attendance area. If the family would like the child to remain at the original school, they must file an Optional Assignment Request, asking for the child to remain at the original school for the remainder of the current school year, or for the remaining grades in the original school. Proof of residency at the new address must accompany the request.

Family Moving to Different Attendance Area After School Year Begins

If a family moves from one attendance area to another within the district after the school year begins, and the family does not want the child to have to transfer schools when they move, they can file an Optional Assignment Request before the school year starts, asking that the child initially be assigned to the second school. A copy of the sales agreement or lease agreement for the new residence must accompany the request, but the only pages needed are those showing the parties to the sale or lease, the address of the residence, the effective date of the sale or lease, and the signatures of the parties. If the request is for a home under construction, a letter from the builder verifying the completion date of the home is required.

Family Wants Child to Attend a Different School

If, for any reason, a family wants the child to attend a school other than the one serving the attendance area in which they live, they must file an Optional Assignment Request.

The granting of an optional assignment request is subject to the following conditions:

  • School bus transportation is only provided to the school serving the attendance area in which the student lives.  Families are responsible for providing transportation to and from the requested school.
  • Once a student is assigned to the requested school, that school becomes the student's assigned school. Consequently, if the family wants to have the student attend a different school before the term of the optional assignment is finished, another optional assignment request must be submitted.
  • The granting of an optional assignment request is contingent upon "space available" in the requested school. The decision on an optional assignment request that is submitted before the start of the school year may not be made until sometime in August, before the start of school.
