Restorative Practices

Restorative Practices Explained

All humans are hardwired to connect. Just as we need food, shelter and clothing, human beings also need strong and meaningful relationships to thrive.

Restorative practices is a field within the social sciences that studies how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities.

Though newer to the social sciences, restorative practices have deep roots within indigenous communities throughout the world.

The Restorative Practices Mission in SCASD

It is the aim of the State College Area School District to use the work of the International Institute of Restorative Practices to develop the community and to manage conflict and tensions by repairing harm and building relationships. Building relationships and developing communities are the proactive arm of Restorative Practices, while repairing harm and restoring relationships are the reactive arm of this practice.

As a district, we have many faculty members trained in, and committed to, leading Restorative Conferences and conversations in their buildings.
