Welcome to Miss Kolenik's English Class!
Welcome to our English class! I look forward to working with each and every one of you during this year-long journey of growth and literary exploration! Scholar bell hooks describes education as "the practice of freedom." As you gradually acquire more freedom, you are also developing your own worldviews; our interactions with literature allow us to cultivate these worldviews as well as encounter those with perspectives that differ from our own. Seeing the world as a place of multiplicity allows us to confidently make decisions that will impact not just ourselves, but the diverse world around us. This may seem like a daunting task, but don't worry—education equips you with the tools necessary to participate in a global society with an informed and practiced mindset. In English class, these tools are not merely those of reading and writing, but also debating, discussing, and creating. As a teacher, I am responsible for providing engaging texts and materials; as a student, you are equally responsible for using them in ways that reflect your true, evolving selves. As the late Toni Morrison once wrote in her novel Beloved, "Freeing yourself was one thing; claiming ownership of that freed self was another." So, show up! Have fun! Finally, and most importantly, arrive ready to learn!
