    Dear Corl Street families,

Whatever your plans for Spring Break, I hope you all have a wonderful week. We’ll be heading to Kalahari and then celebrating my mom’s 70th birthday at the end of the week. It’s hard to believe we’ll be in the home stretch when we return.

    Arrival & Dismissal

Please remember that during arrival you cannot pull into the alley to drop off your child. Additionally, there are serious safety concerns about dropping students off across the street. I have had multiple reports about the concern for students being dropped off across the street. The State College PD is aware of these safety concerns and may begin monitoring the situation more closely.

    Dear Corl Street families,

The 5th grade PAWS ambassadors worked with me this month to create a visual with concrete examples of volume expectations. I’ll be meeting with each grade level during lunch before the end of the month to work on setting these expectations.

    January 2, 2023

    Happy New Year!

We look forward to seeing all of our Cougars tomorrow. It will be a Day 5 in our cycle schedule. Starting this week there will not be a crossing guard at the intersection of Corl and Dorum due to a retirement. The State College Police are working on finding a replacement. If anyone is interested, or knows of someone who may be, please reach out to them directly. They’ve also alerted me to many safety concerns during arrival and dismissal, so please read over the reminders below.

    Arrival & Dismissal

Car drop off occurs along Corl Street. Have your child(ren) exit your vehicle on the side closest to the school. It is a safety concern to drop off on the opposite side of the street.

DO NOT drop off or pick up your child in the alley. Not only does it pose a safety concern, but it creates congestion for school buses and employees.

As we move through these winter months and beyond, students need to use the stairs or sidewalk leading up to the school when they arrive and leave. We want to take care of our property both inside and outside. Please do not have your children walk up the grass hill through the parking spaces.

Thank you for your attention to these reminders.

    Dr. Mark

    December 2

    Dear families,

Pajama Day was an excellent way to end the week! As the weather continues to get colder, please remember to label your child’s winter gear. It really helps us sort through the lost and found table. I hope you all have a great weekend!

    Progress Reports

Your child’s first progress report card will be available in ParentVue, Monday, December 5 at 10:00 am. In order to view the progress report this year please log in to ParentVUE. Then, on the left-hand menu, please select the “Documents” option. An electronic copy of your child’s progress report will be posted here.

Please note that the “Report Card” section of ParentVUE is only used in secondary, and no information will be displayed here for elementary students.

If you have questions regarding your child’s report card please contact your child’s teacher.

If you do not see your child’s report card in ParentVUE by Monday after 10:00 am, or you are having trouble accessing ParentVUE, please contact itsupport@scasd.org.

It is important to know that teachers have been working hard to synthesize and summarize their observations of your child’s growth and learning during this marking period. We know that this year is rather unusual, and everyone is doing their best to provide accurate information and feedback. Teachers are following our usual curriculum, but the pacing with which they work their way through our curriculum is adjusted based on students’ needs. Teachers will only report out on the standards they have taught in each area as they typically do so you have an overall sense of how your child is progressing.

    Scholastic Book Fair Results!

We had a super successful book fair this year!  Thank you to everyone who volunteered and shopped!

We sold 1101 items over the three days the book fair was open for total sales of $7670.40.  We choose to receive our profits in Scholastic Bucks, which means we earned $3685.20 Scholastic Bucks for Mrs. Davis to use to purchase books for our school.  In addition to this we earned another $200 Scholastic Bonus Bucks.

Through our All For Books Fundraiser, we were also able to give gift certificates to over 30 students and $55.00 gift certificates to 14 of our amazing teachers which they used during the fair to purchase books for their classrooms!

Thank you for supporting our school!!

    November 11

    Dear Corl Street families,

We had a fabulous Veterans Day assembly today. We are so grateful to the teachers and students who led today’s events. Next week, we’re equally as excited to welcome Kay Haring. The preparations in Art and Library for her visit have been phenomenal.

    Visiting Author - Kay Haring

On Friday, November 18, author Kay Haring will be visiting Corl Street and Gray's Woods!  She is the sister of artist Keith Haring, and the author of a picture book about Keith titled, Keith Haring: The Boy Who Just Kept Drawing.  Students may remember this book was part of March Book Madness a few years ago.  We are fortunate that Kay can join us, as her visit was originally planned pre-pandemic.  Thank you to Shannon Stallings (art teacher at CS back then and currently a CS parent) for applying for a grant to make this happen!

In preparation for the event, two things are happening:

    1) AT SCHOOL: In art and library classes, all students will learn about Keith and Kay Haring, as well as read the book The Boy Who Just Kept Drawing.

    2) AT HOME: Families may pre-purchase a signed copy of Kay Haring's book, The Boy Who Kept Drawing.  Purchasing a book is optional.  Families who wish to order a signed copy of the book can do so by printing and returning this order form with $15 (cash or check) to their child's classroom teacher by Wednesday, November 9th.  The paper copy of this form was also sent home with your child today (Wednesday, Oct 26) that you can fill out and send back. Books will not be for sale on the day of the event.  Our goal is for signed books to be delivered to students on the day of this author visit.

Please reach out to Paije Davis (pss12@scasd.org), Courtney Latorre (ctl14@scasd.org), and/or Kelsi Dalton (kbs19@scasd.org) with any questions.

    PTO Updates

Did you know that there are 2 easy ways you can help support our school (that require very little effort & no additional spending on your part!).

    1. SIGN UP FOR AMAZON SMILE (and before all that holiday shopping, encourage friends/family members to do the same!)

Follow this link to learn how you can sign up for Amazon Smile, which allows you to support the Corl St PTO every time you shop on Amazon, with no extra cost to you!

    2. DOWNLOAD the BOX TOPS APP and scan receipts and/or items when relevant

    • Download the Box Tops App from the App Store or Google Play

    • Sign up with an account (through Google, Facebook, or your email address)

    • Any time you purchase an item with the Box Tops logo, simply scan the store receipt in your app, and voila! Corl St earns money.

    October 14

    Dear Corl Street Families,

October has quickly arrived and we are looking forward to our Harvest Festival on Wednesday, October 26, which will include class celebrations as well as an all-school parade. Remember there is no school on Thursday and Friday, October 27 and 28 for conferences.

    Costumes

Costumes are always optional. Children who choose to bring costumes to school will be given a brief amount of time to change shortly before class celebrations begin. When planning your child’s costume, please be sure they are age and weather appropriate. Also, please remember our district weapons policy - weapons of any kind, even replicas, are not permitted. Inflatables will be allowed for the parade, but will need to be deflated in the classroom. Additionally, there will not be time for your child to apply any makeup.

    Class Celebrations

Brief class celebrations will take place before or after the parade on October 26 depending on the class schedule. Please watch for notification from your child’s teacher regarding times and need for volunteers. If you plan to volunteer in the classroom during this time, please be sure you have completed the volunteer requirements found on the SCASD website: https://www.scasd.org/volunteer.

    All-School Parade

Weather permitting, the parade will take place outdoors. Classes will begin the parade at 1:40pm. Classes will exit the back of the building, follow the path up and around the perimeter of the playground and reenter the building through the K/1 hallway doors then return to their classrooms. Spectators should plan to watch the parade from the playground area, just like the Cougar Cat Run. In the case of inclement weather, the outdoor parade will not happen, so fingers crossed for great weather!

    Opt Out Procedure

Finally, participation in the Harvest Festival is not mandatory. If you prefer that your child NOT participate in these activities (parade and class celebration), please respond to this email by Monday, October 17, as alternative activities will be available during this time.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns. We look forward to this special fall event and truly appreciate your cooperation and support!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Mark

    October 7, 2022

    Dear Corl Street families,

We are looking forward to our annual Cougar Cat Run next Friday, from 9:45-10:45. Fourth and fifth grades run from 9:55-10:10, second and third grades from 10:10-10:25, and kindergarten and first from 10:25-10:40. Thank you for supporting our main fundraiser as we are so grateful for all the support from our families.

Crossing Guard week of October 10-from the police department

Due to a shortage of available staff, the crossing guard position at Corl Street and Dorum Ave. will not be staffed from October 10, 2022 through October 17, 2022.  Please instruct your children to walk on the west side of Corl Street where they will not have to cross any streets without the aid of a crossing guard.  It has been observed by guards recently that many adults are crossing with children diagonally across Corl Street not within intersections.  Please do not do this when walking children to school as it teaches dangerous habits to children.

    PTO Meeting

Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 11 at 7:00. Here is the Zoom link to join:

Things like school supplies, field trips, Field Day, special projects, and teacher appreciation days, which are all sponsored by our PTO.  Our ability to continue these programs depends on the success of this fundraiser.

In addition to monetary donations, we need volunteers to help on October 14.

    Dear Corl Street families,

Thanks to all who joined us for the PTO meeting this past week. Attached is a summary of the meeting in case you’d like to check it out. Tonight will be a great night for a football game. I hope your family can join us at the State High vs. Hollidaysburg game. The Mark family will definitely be there, and two lucky Corl Street Kindergarten students will be out on the field before the game with me! But whatever your weekend plans entail, I hope you have a relaxing one.

    You’re Invited!

We would like to extend an invitation to a special viewing showcase of Future Forward, our new tile mural on Saturday, September 17th from 1-3 pm. Please join us in celebrating our children, their collaborative artwork, and the future ahead. The viewing showcase is a 2 hour "come and go" type of event. Enter through the main doors and down the hall to the colorful glimmering jewel that now graces the wall. As an expression of gratitude, we will be offering dairy full and dairy free ice cream sandwiches. Hope to see you then!
