Tonya Black Named Assistant Principal
Tonya Black will continue her long and varied career with the State College Area School District as the newest State High assistant principal.
On May 3, the State College Area School District Board of Directors approved Black for her latest position in the district. As part of Principal Curtis Johnson’s administrative team, she oversees students in grades 10-12, last names beginning with H to N. She had been the school’s Dean of Students since 2019.
“I am honored to be able to support our students, families, faculty, and staff in the role of a high school assistant principal,” Black said. “I look forward to many more years serving our community.”
Black holds an undergraduate degree in elementary education and a Master of Education degree in curriculum and instruction, both from Penn State. She also is a Penn State doctoral candidate in curriculum and instruction.
During her 25-year SCASD career, she has been an elementary classroom teacher, an instructional support/Title 1 Reading/ English language learners teacher, an instructional support teacher, and a reading specialist. She also served as an interim elementary school principal for one year.
Her credentials include ESL, English and administrative certifications. Additionally, she is a Restorative Practices trainer and was a safety care support trainer for four years.
“Ms. Black brings a wealth of expertise and experience to her new role, as well as strong connections to the school and district, making her a great fit to continue helping guide State High students to future success,” Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education Will Stout said. “Our high school leadership team heads into next year even stronger now.”
