Jump Rope for Heart
Given an opportunity to join the fight against heart disease, scores of State College Area School District students jumped at the chance.
About 150 sets of springy legs skipped and shuffled in the Jump Rope for Heart event in February at State High, helping raise $60,968 for the American Heart Association — a record for the annual benefit organized by the SCASD physical education department.
More than 700 students contributed to the final tally, but those who couldn’t jump at the official event hopped during their PE classes instead.
“This year was by far State College's most successful year since we started participating in the Jump Rope for Heart event 19 years ago,” said Steve Kurzinger, the district’s K-12 coordinator for health, physical education, family consumer sciences, and driver/safety education.
“The elementary physical education staff works really hard to promote the event in their PE classes and teach the students the importance of exercise and how it helps prevent heart disease,” he continued. “Each year we seem to improve our donation by a few thousand dollars to the American Heart Association, which is fantastic! It shows the dedication the teachers, students, and parents have to this special event.”
