State High Chamber Singers
Sixteen members of the State High Chamber Singers, directed by Erik Clayton, performed in the prestigious 29th Annual Heinz Chapel Chamber Choir Festival on Feb. 17.
Each year, the festival invites three elite a cappella choirs to sing. State High previously participated in 1999, 2008 and 2014 under the direction of Bob Drafall.
Founded by Professor John Goldsmith, the Heinz Chapel Choir Director from 1989 to 2014 to encourage and reward a cappella singing at the high school level, the festival included the following in its program:
“A cappella music requires the highest level of musicianship. Directors who successfully meet the challenges of this genre demonstrate outstanding aural skills, artistic vision, and supreme confidence in their choirs; singers exhibit mastery of concentration, tuning, ensemble skills, and precision. The collective patience required to master these skills is rewarded by a singular aesthetic satisfaction. Today we honor the courageous directors and tenacious high school singers who have accepted the many challenges which unaccompanied repertoire presents.”
In honor of March being Music in our Schools Month, the SCASD K-12 Music Boosters thanked “our dedicated music teachers who provide music education to our students that begins in kindergarten and stretches far beyond the reaches of high school.”
