Perfect Advanced Placement Exam Scores
Nobody’s perfect in life, but as State High students Angela Abraham and Lorenzo Frepoli showed, Advanced Placement exams can be a different matter.
Recently, they achieved a rare feat — perfect AP exams with every possible point earned, placing them in elite company.
Abraham, a sophomore, was one of 335 students worldwide who aced the computer science principles exam, out of 119,144 test takers. Frepoli, a senior, joined 219 students with a flawless portfolio for the drawing exam from the 18,345 worldwide who submitted work.
“It’s very impressive,” SCASD Superintendent Bob O’Donnell said.
Even without perfection, earning a top score of 5 is a select accomplishment. Globally, only 12 percent with computer science and 14 percent with art reach that pinnacle. James Byrns and Maure Irwin-Furmanek teach AP Computer Science Principles and AP Studio Art, respectively, at State High.
“These extraordinary academic accomplishments are likely a direct reflection of the top-quality education being offered at State College Area High School,” the Advanced Placement Program said in a statement. “We applaud both your school's hard-working students and the devoted AP teachers who've so successfully engaged and challenged them with college-level material.”
Annually, State High students fare well on AP exams. During the 2019-2020 school year, for example, SCASD students took 1,180 AP tests with 81 percent scoring a 3 or higher. AP exams are scored from 1-5. That year, the district had 209 AP Scholars — students scoring a 3 or higher on three or more exams — with an average score of 4.22.
