Message to Parents, Faculty/Staff, and Community re: High School Project
Board of Directors to consider and refine process for high school project
by Bob O’Donnell, Superintendent of SchoolsState College Area School District Board of School Directors will consider and refine a proposed process for the high school project at a work session on Monday, November 12, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Monday’s meeting will involve a focused discussion about a proposed high school facility process. We all need to work together and determine the best direction for our community to realize updated facilities. We will provide multiple avenues for community members to engage with us and to monitor all aspects of this process, including important face-to-face conversations and social media tools.
The Board of Directors and administration have begun laying groundwork for this important facility project by initiating several steps:
- Crabtree, Rohrbaugh and Associates has been hired as the architectural firm leading the design process, and Brainspaces, Inc. is the selected educational planner. On Monday, representatives from both professional firms will be attending the work session speaking to their specific roles and responsibilities for this process.
- They will also review and discuss the proposed project calendar and the sequencing of steps necessary for such a comprehensive process.
- The draft calendar proposes a community referendum on the funding for the project to occur sometime during the 2013-14 school year.
Key factors for the architects will be to develop an understanding of the current use of space as it exists on Westerly Parkway and to explore additional site options and potential scenarios available to the district. Additionally, the architects will conduct site analyses of the existing facilities and evaluate the results/recommendations from the previous district-wide facilities master plan (2009).
An essential component in the overall process will be budget development for the project. As the process unfolds and potential scenarios are developed, the board will publicly discuss projected costs of the various options with the architects, administration and community.
The district is committed to community engagement throughout the process. Specific opportunities for community engagement will be posted on the district website, www.scasd.org, and through local media outlets. If you have questions or comments on the process at anytime, please access the district’s digital drop box at www.scasd.org/Page/1268.
